Knox Grammar

Education painting

Project Value: $30,000
Duration: 2 weeks (completed during school holidays)
Status: Complete

Dukes carried out a full internal and external repaint of the Knox Grammar staff administration building over a school holiday period. The project involved safe lead paint remediation, followed by a complete repaint, and was completed within two weeks, ready for staff and students to return at the start of term.

Project Overview

The Knox Grammar staff administration building underwent a full internal and external refresh, including the façades, windows, doors, trims, offices and corridors. Before painting began, the team identified and safely managed areas containing lead to meet SafeWork NSW standards. With the surfaces prepared and sealed, we applied high-quality coatings to give the building a clean, durable finish that will be easy to maintain over time.

The goal was to achieve a safe, high-quality outcome within a short timeframe. Works were completed entirely within the school holiday period to uphold strict safety, cleanliness and environmental standards and to minimise disruption to staff or students.

Access Methods

An elevated work platform was used to safely and efficiently reach and complete the external areas. During the lead paint remediation phase, we implemented containment sheeting and exclusion zones to protect workers and maintain compliance. The program was carefully sequenced to manage access and coordinate smoothly with other contractors on site.

Challenges

Painting projects in schools and educational facilities often come with a few extra challenges, due to the need to complete the work around additional logistics. For Knox Grammar, these included:

  • Lead paint removal – required full WHS compliance, including PPE use and certified waste disposal.
  • Tight timeframe – efficient staging and extended work hours were necessary to complete the project within the school holidays.
  • Weather management – exterior coatings had to be scheduled around changing conditions to maintain quality.
  • Active environment – strict dust and noise controls were implemented near operational school areas to minimise disruption.

“Knox Grammar trusted us to deliver a safe, high-quality outcome within a tight holiday window. Our team took real pride in leaving the building ready for staff and students to walk back into on day one.”

Project Sentiment

Our client was very pleased with how smoothly the project ran from start to finish. The facilities team highlighted the professionalism of our crew and the care taken at every stage, particularly during the lead paint remediation process. They also noted how well the site was maintained throughout. The project was completed ahead of schedule, and the positive outcome has since led to further opportunities to work with the school.

Communication

Communication is central to every successful commercial painting project. Throughout the works, Dukes provided the Knox Facilities Manager with daily progress updates and held pre-start meetings to confirm sequencing, access and site requirements. During the lead paint remediation phase, detailed documentation was shared at each stage, outlining lead-safe procedures and approvals.

Coating Systems & Materials

Dukes chose Dulux products to achieve a durable, high-quality finish suited to the school environment:

  • Dulux Weathershield for external surfaces for long-term UV and weather protection.
  • Dulux Wash & Wear Low Sheen is ideal for internal spaces due to its durability and easy-to-clean properties, making it perfect for high-traffic areas.

All coating systems were applied in accordance with AS/NZS 2311:2017 – Guide to the Painting of Buildings, ensuring compliance and lasting performance.

Outcome

This project delivered on all objectives and met all client expectations. The administration building now presents a fresh, bright and modern look, with a durable finish designed to withstand the heavy usage that comes with being a school environment. Not only was the appearance enhanced, but its protection has also been extended, and future maintenance needs have been minimised.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you minimise disruption during school painting projects?

Where possible, education painting works are scheduled during school holiday periods to avoid interrupting teaching and learning. This allows major work to be completed while the site is quieter, ensuring everything is ready when staff and students return.

How do you manage safety on school sites?

Strict site controls are in place from start to finish. This includes exclusion zones, clear signage, and compliance with all relevant regulations. For projects involving hazardous materials such as lead paint, additional containment measures are used to protect everyone on site.

How was lead paint safely handled at Knox Grammar?

Before repainting began, the team identified areas containing lead and followed SafeWork NSW requirements to remediate them. Containment sheeting and exclusion zones were used throughout, with every step documented and approved before work continued.

Why was the project scheduled for the school holidays?

Working within the school holiday period allowed the entire project to be completed without interfering with staff or students. It also created a clear window to carry out the more complex stages, such as lead remediation, without added pressure from daily site activity.

What difference did the repaint make to the administration building?

The building now features a clean, bright finish designed to withstand high-use environments. The repaint has improved the appearance of the space, extended protection against wear, and reduced the need for ongoing maintenance.
